Extra Credit for My Students

Since many of you cannot get enough science and it seems that are always students asking me for ways to get extra credit, I will accept any review of a science current event. I believe that it is very important that we constantly read and evaluate new findings by scientists and I strongly encourage all of my students to do the same.

On this page there are several news feeds from different science news sources. Click on an article of interest, read it, and provide me a brief summary as well as your opinion on it. For each article you review, I will give you an extra credit point. You may use any other source for your article, but include it along with your summary.

Post work as a comment to this thread. Students may respond to other students work as long as it is constructive criticism or with additional information.

Also one robot that was interesting was a robot that was making food to eat

Marco,

Nice job reading all those articles! I like many of your comments.

Did the study with the eldery and the robotic dogs show that they were better than a real dog or the same? I can't imagine any robot dog being as good a companion as a real dog.

Even when I was a kid, they said robots will replace humans, and even though many factories are run by robotics, you are not going to get any robot to show emotion like a human or even a dog any time soon.

The Riccardo Science Zone said...

Sabri,

Nice work reading those articles!

The one about the website that was shut down was interesting. This is a problem, but not just in China. For years, there has always been some type of rare or endangered animal that is hunted and sold illegally (Whales, Sharks, and Tigers are the ones usually traded for). They only way this will stop is if people stop buying those things.

The Riccardo Science Zone said...

Joseph,

You are right, many of the smaller animals will play a role in global warming. More and more scientists look to how these animals adapt to climate change to figure out what will happen in the future. We will speak more about this in the next few weeks.

The Riccardo Science Zone said...

Alex,

Good job reading the articles.

Like I told Joseph, we will be looking at how these animals are impacted, but can you think of any relationship there may be between animals affected by global warming and animals affected by illegal trade. It seems these days no one is on the side of the animals...

I just read about how China is selling illegal wildlife online. I think that China is very selfish for selling the animals. Not only is it illegal but the animals they are selling are dying out and they are not helping. They are selling products from beautiful animals like tigers and elephants. But I'm also happy that there are groups like IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) for catching the people that are selling the animal products online. Hopefully people can realize that what they are doing is wrong.

I found this on a game website
This was quite tragic
Many of you may know about the MMORPG
game called WoW(world of warcraft)
A player of this game had died in real life, so the guild members decided to have a funeral for her in the game.
But they had it in a PVP(player vs player) server thus meaning people could fight each other in that server.
An opposing guild decided to get some kills and "crashed" the funeral then killing all guild members attending the funeral(virtually).

Jerks being on the internet is quite common.

Obama wants the army to have hybrid cars. The military has been trying to do this for years. Obama gave the military one million dollars for a head start. We think this is a good idea because it wont pollute the air as much and this could help Global Warming. Dear Mr. Riccardo,
I have just read about how they are using botox on new borns. They are putting Botulinum toxin (botox) and it is helping babies that are suffering from Charge Syndrome. Charge Syndrome is rare and has many birth deffects in organs. It can hurt the heart, eyes, ears, and also effects the salivary glands. They are very hyper and give fluids to the lungs that cause asphyxia. This is what happened to Dr. Sam Daniel's first patient. He created the new technic and is from the Montreal Childre's Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre. Even though many people have been satified and have relief for the work that Dr. Daniel's has done. But i think there is something else that is going to be brought. They are putting one of the most poisonous naturally occuring substances in babies. I don't think this is best thing to be done but I also think it is a great idea and my thought about it could be wrong. I'm just glad as of now it is only helping people from suffering.

Mariahs' Conclusion:
As you can see my partnered and I tested with the food dye and water. This experiment was a pretty cool project to learn on how long it took for food dye to fill up a cups of different cups of still water. As we were doing the experiment my hypothesis changed, I thought that all of the room temperature waters were going to finish first.

Mariahs' Refection:
I think next time if we do this project again we should make sure for each trial the same water is the same temperature (ex. cold water should be the same temperature for each trial). Also instead of using measuring cups maybe use clear plastic cups.

I just read this off a metro newspaper...
I lost the newspaper but i remember it was about Scientist who took in fished fish and trained them to move to a certain place when they heard a certain sound. Once they were taught the fish were sent back to the ocean to grow big.when they were big enough, the scientist would use a machine to project the sound and take the fish back for fishers to sell or people to eat.
By doing this small fish won't be caught and will able to spawn more fish

About 17.4 percent of the world population is Catholic. about 19.2 percent of the world population is Muslim. They say that Muslims are known to have many kids unlike the Catholics. From what i see i kind of agree because all of the muslim people i know have like about 5 brothers or sisters.

I just read about how the big-nosed antelope is in danger. It is a wierd looking animal that lives in Central Asia. It is very close to extinction. The saiga has the head of a camel and the body o fa deer. One threat to them is poachers. Another is it's migration route. They need food and water. My opinion I never heard of this animal and if they did go extinct there wouldn't be a big effect on me. But Im not saying I want them to die out. They are kind of cute to me!

The police had found it and were very aware that the cargo was very wierd. It was no identifying marks and was very heavy. When they opened it they had found the fossil. Some archaeologist at the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín de Arequipa said that the 19 pound jawbone came from a Triceratops. Dear Mr. Ricccardo,
I just read about how Squid Beaks Use Chemical Trick to Keep From Tearing Off. The beak of a jumbo shrimp can slice threw the tissue of it's prey. The squid's beaks are one of the hardest organic materials known. They are also very strong. They can slice a captured fish's back and the beak can sever the fish's nerve cord and cause paralysis. But the beak is never damaged. So peopel took bits of the beak to sample and found changing ratios of chitin, which is a tough sugar chain. It spans the length of the structurefrom the water and proteins in a matrix. The beak gets softer and more flexible when it comes to the soft muscle tissue. From these answers there may be a solution to to attach mechanically mismatched materials. I can't tbelieve that they found this interesting and amazing information. This really shows how animals really do help, also testing and examining things. I think that is a cool part of being a scientist.

I just read about how fat kids need less intensive exercise for effective weight loss. They had tested which fat was burned during graded leg cycling exercises in thirty 12 year old boys, 17 of them had been obese and the others were skinny and healthy. The intensity of the work increased every 3.5 minutes and the level of the most fat burned off needed to be found. It was found by the amount of oxygen breathed in and the amount of carbon dioxide breathed out per minute as the exercise intensity increases, calculated as the VO2 peak. They had found out that the kids that were skinny had a better benefit to the excersize and for the kids that were obeast it had not helped them. I was surprised to see that the obese boys reached lower levels of exercise intensity than the lean boys. I would have thought it would have been the same because the ones over wiegth wouldnt have worked as hard and there breathes maybe could have been the same.

I just read about China Quake Delivered Seismic One-Two Punch. Its about a magnitude 7.9 quake hit Sichuan Province. But went all the way to Beijing, Shanghai, and Thailand. It killed about 50,000 people and affected about ten million people. I can't imagine how scary it was for those people. How are going to fix all the land there?

Dear Mr. Riccardo,
I just read how Polar Bears Listed as Threatened Species in U.S. It's about how Polar Bears are in threat to dying. It is mostly because of the sea ice. If all the sea ice is drowning how are they going to eat, travel, and mate. Some say that we have a part to them dying. From the Global Warming. I agree with that because if we werent polluting the Earth and making it hotter then many animals would not in danger right now. I think it is very unfair because they can't do anything about it. I feel very bad for al those animals!!

I just read how On tap in space: Urine will not go to waste. It's about how astronauts are making urine into water. They csan use it to drink, fod preperation, and wash. Some say that it may be even cleaner than the tap water we drink, which is pretty amazing. It is a $250 machine. I think it is a little disgusting to know that you are drinking what was once pee, but if you think abotu it it is the same as every other recycling. The things we eat or drink from were once used and became garbage. This article was really interesting. But what i want to know is how they make it so clean?

I just read Panda Finds Way Home to Reserve After China Quake. Its about how the panda near went back home after the quake in china. There are still 2 missing. They lived at the Wolong National Nature Reserve in central China. It is 18 miles from the epicenter of the Sichuan Province. They say that many pandas come home to where they were before when they were lost. I thinks its pretty cool how the panda found its way home. It probably was because it was an adult and had more experience.

Dear Mr. Riccardo,
I just saw & read about how farmers worked on a soybean field. They made it look like the Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. The farmers went on a strike because teh goverment put a tazx on exporting grains and oilseeds. They make there money with this and it is not fair for them. Why did the goverment do that?? But god thing Argentina's four largest farm groups said they would stop the strike to talk with the government. I also think its really cool how the farmers draw the pictures... pretty amazing!!

Mr. R I just read an article named "Rattlesnake Bite Victims Showing Extreme Symptoms". The article suggest that snake bites have become more deadly. The toxic substance in snake venom has become more dangerous. Scientist think that the snake itself has changed causing the change in venom. In 2007 5 people were nearly killed by snake bites and in 2008 one person has died. Snake venom studiers are still unsure of why the snake venom is more deadly.

Mr. R I just read an article named "Monster Quakes Set Off Global Tremors". The article is about the possible effects of the recent earthquakes in China. Only 15 earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 have been recorded. The earthquake in China is the most reacent.

The sponge has a 97% kill rate within 1 million gallons of water. This sponge is truely a good weapon against water pollution.

I just read the article "Students with a dense family history of alcoholism are most at risk of alcohol-use disorders". It is about students developing alcoholic disorders from the family histerY. If the family history has a lot of relatives who were alcoholists, then the students would most likely develop alcoholic disorders.
I found this interesting because i never thought family alcoholism would affect students behaviour towards alcohol.

I just read the article "Monkeys' Brains Run Robot Arm" . It is about a monket being able to eat with a robot arm. They inserted something into its brain, and into the arm. This makes the brain control how the robot arm moves.

I found this very interesting because an animal has the ability to move a robot arm; with the help of scientists though.

I just read the article "Kenya's Poor Hungry in the Midst of Plenty" . It is about the food business in Kenya doing horrible. In Kenya food is plentiful, but unaffordable. The price in food skyrocketed, and worst of all, not many people buy it.

I found this depressing because people are starving, and most people live in hunger everyday there.

i just finished reading an article called "New combination therapy safe, promising for melanoma patients." This article was about Researchers in the melanoma and skin cancer program combined two biotherapies, treatments that help the immune system fight cancer. Melanoma is a rare form of skin cancer. Approximently 160,000 people are diagnosed each year world wide. Researchers said by adding tremelimumab to the treatmet is safe and is an effective way to help an anti-tumor response. I think this article was very important because skin cancer is a very important disease.
