Extra Credit for My Students

Since many of you cannot get enough science and it seems that are always students asking me for ways to get extra credit, I will accept any review of a science current event. I believe that it is very important that we constantly read and evaluate new findings by scientists and I strongly encourage all of my students to do the same.

On this page there are several news feeds from different science news sources. Click on an article of interest, read it, and provide me a brief summary as well as your opinion on it. For each article you review, I will give you an extra credit point. You may use any other source for your article, but include it along with your summary.

Post work as a comment to this thread. Students may respond to other students work as long as it is constructive criticism or with additional information.

dear mr.riccardo,
I just finished reading an article called " heavy pollution warning issued in Bejing." This articcle was about pollution levels rising highly there. Also people who have problems with their resperatory system should stay inside because of the pollution in the air and the warmness. This article is very interesting to me because global warming and pollution are very serious problems.

Mr. R I just read an article named "Tropical Storm Arthur Hits Yucatan". The article states that the Hurricane Season will hit one day earlier than it useally does. In the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, which is where Cancun is located, has shut down all ports for travel and has banned any water sports. After Tropical Storm Arhtur hit Yucatan it started to head for the area of the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico itself. It is not yet truely known how much damage the Tropical Storm will do.

Japan hopes that they can get their alert system fixed so that what happen to China would not happen to them.

I just read and saw the pictures of Human Sacrifices Found at Ancient Peru Site? It is about were found how bodies were found at the Peruvian archaeological site of Bandurria. It was not the first human bodies found. But the first human bodies that were thought to be human sacrafices. Human bones of ritualized violence. I think this is a hypothesis that may be true. I believe that there was human sacrafce. This is pretty interesting.

I just read how Road traffic deaths in China have soared almost 100 percent in 20 years. It is about how many people in China dying from road traffic. Before road traffic injuries became the ninth leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Now in China it is the first. On tv you can see how China has a big population and that can be dangerous at times. People should be more aware of the cars aroung them.

Dear Mr. Riccardo,
I just saw the video on Eruption Changing Galapagos. Its about how a volcano has lava flowing for the secong week in a row. They think that the volcano is going to change the geography of the island. I think that it is very bad because a lot of the unique animals there will die. But as you said the animals will change because of evolution. Only the biggest and strongest animals will survive. Then there is only going to be the animals like that forever. That is the pretty cool part.

I just read BEFORE & AFTER: 3rd Largest Rain Forest Vanishing Fast. It is about how satellite images show Papua New Guinea's Gulf Province rain forest in 1988 and 2002. By the way it is being destroyed the forest will be destucted 53% by 2021. Between 1972 and 2002 alone, 19.8 million acres were lost. I feel bad for all the aniams that will start to vanish. But the thing I don't really get is why is the rain forest being destroyed?

i just read Good dental hygiene may help prevent heart infection. 290 dental patiens were investigated of their bacteria released into their bloodstream, during three different dental activities. They were tooth brushing, a single tooth extraction with a preventive antibiotic and a single tooth extraction with a placebo. They found out that there was less bacteria from brushing your teeth. But there are other ways that bacteria can get in your bloodstream, like chewing your food, which you do everyday. So keeping a good dental hygiene can help you from heart infection!

I just read Stranded Divers Chase off Komodo Dragon on Island. Divers were swept away thinking sharks would be there biggest threat. Until they landed on an Indonesian island with the threat of the Komodo Dragon. The divers were on Rinca's palm-fringed beach. When they faced the lizerd they fought it off by hitting it with rocks and pieces of wood. The Komodo Dragon is known of killing humans but the divers were lucky to scare the predator away. I cant imagine how frightening it must have been to be almost attacked by the lizard.

I just read Faster-Web iPhone Expected to Be Introduced Today. They are introducing the new iPhone 2.0. They say it has better internet access. It's also will let users download a wide range of powerful new business applications and social-networking programs. The phone is suppossed to be available in mid- june. This article is old and the iPhone came out already. But i think this made the iPhone sound better than it is. It it just like many other phones except it is touch screen. Plus the internet is not even that fast. This just shows how much advertising really lies.

Dear Mr. Riccardo,
i just saw the video to Dog Eats Poison Toad. An australian bull Arab hound had swallowed a poisonouse frog. It jumped into the house and the dog had swollowed. It started to get sick and throw up. so the owner rushed the dog to the vet. They gave the dogs drugs to stop it from vomiting. The toad had finally came up. It had been in the dogs stomach for 40 minutes. The dog had recovered and lived after eating the frog. The thing that is so amazing is that a dog will live 20 minutes after eating a poisonous frog and the dog lived 40minutes. All I want to know is how is that possible?

I just read Intelligence in the Wild Kingdom. This is about how smart animals are. Before people thought that animals were mindless creatures. But we have realized now that animals have feelings and are very intelligent. Like the crow creating its own tool. It uses a stick to pull out worms. The Octopus uses rocks to make a home. But most of all monkeys are extremely smart. Chimpanzee's and Bonobos are most like humans. A Chimpanzee was able to learn sign language. One chimpanzee has learned about 250 signs. I think that animals are very smart and understand how others are feeling!

I read the article BEFORE AFTER: Eagle Gets Artificial Beak. The article was so cool. I never heard anything like it. This bird’s top beak was completely obliterated. But, I never thought you could put an artificial beak. I wonder if this would affect the eating behavior. Or maybe it’s natural animal behavior.

I read the article China Holds Funeral for Panda Killed by Earthquake. It was surprising. I never thought a Panda would get a funeral would get a funeral. It’s so odd. But, it seemed nice since the panda died painfully, by an earthquake. A wall crushed the panda. So, it at least was nice and seemed sensible since it was at a panda center, where they are suppose to be safe…

Dear Mr.Riccardo,
During the 540 million years that have passed. There have been 5 "Sixth mass" extinctions mostly of marine plants and animals."Each time, between 75 and 95 percent of all species vanished". Which they think is caused by sea level changes and this thought has been going for 60 years, But its not only sea changes that are causing the extinctions.

It also talks about how they might have uncovered a herbivorous stegosaurus. The fossils could have dated to 150 million years ago. The dinosaurs are from the late Jurassic period Like the ones at the Dinosaur National Monument.

I think that finding this frog just proves that they are more species out or were out there

Dear Mr.Riccardo ,
Since the video we watched today about the poisinous newt, i researched it up and found out these facts,

"When viewed from above, the eyes do not usually reach the outline of the head, while those of T. t. torosa usually do."

"Adults are 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inches long (6.4 - 8.9 cm) from snout to vent, and 3 1/2 - 7 7/8 inches (8.9 - 20 cm) in total length."

"Lower eyelids are dark. Eye has a yellow patch, unlike the solid black eyes of T. rivularis."

"Adult in defensive posture, showing the brightly-colored underside as a warning, and curling the tail,"

"During the breeding season, adult males develop nuptial pads on the toes to improve their ability to hold onto females during amplexus. Compare with the toes of a breeding female without these pads."

Dear Mr.Riccardo
Despite the video of deadly newts i learned about this unusual animal and decided to do some researching, The hoop snake is a resident of Texas and is a very unusual snake not liek the others, it holds itself by grabbing the tip of its tail in its mouth and forming a hoop, that is how it got its name the hoop snake. Then it gets upright and rolls at a very fast speed trying to catch its victim. This wierd new reptile has another feature that makes it most feared its extremely poisonous, but the way it injects the poisen in its victims is also wierd. Instead of biting, liek other snakes, it has a stinger on the tip of its tail and thats how it delivers the deadly venom.

Dear Mr.Riccardo,
I have finally found there to be only four poiseness snakes to be found in the United States and all four live in Texas and most of the rest of the South. The snakes are rattlesnake, water moccasin or cottonmouth moccasin, copperhead and coral snake.

Newts and snakes arent the only deadly poiseness things, "Poison hemlock is a coarse biennial herb with a smooth, purple-spotted, hollow stem and leaves like parsley." It grows about 3 to 6 feet tall and in the late summer iy grows many small white flowers. Its leaves are extremely "nauseating" when tasted. Poison hemlock was discovered in North America from Europe. The plants are easily found along roadsides on the banks of streams, ditches and canals. It is also found in all parts of Illinois

"I have a question. In class we saw the video on how they found that the nute is very poisonous. Well what if something ate that snake, then ate that animal, and ate that animal, then humans ate that animal. Could it possibly harm us?"

That's a really good question Alexa! There is likelyhood that eating something that ate something else that was poisonous could be harmful. Some animals ingest the poisonous animal and then the animal uses that poison to protect itself. Insects do this with poisonois plants and so do some sea animals.

The poison is most likely broken down by the digestive system in the garter snake that eats the newt, but it may not be a good idea to eat one.

Many plants and animals have some sort of poison defense, so its best not to eat them unless you know for sure.

There are thinking that this summer the artic will be ice free. From satellite images people were able to see how the area around the geographic North Pole is very thin ice. I think that Global Warming is really going to have a bid effect on us this summer and i agree, there probably wont be much ice in the artic.

I just saw the video "Mutant" Mosquitoes Created. It is about how scientists are trying to stop malaria. Scientists have been observing and testing mosquitos trying to figure out how to control malaria. They dont want to get rid of the mosquito just create similar ones. Malaria kills 3 million people world wide evry year. Mostly in Africa.
any africans were givin a net to prevent them from coming in and some used pesticides. But that still hasnt iincreased the problem. But some people think that mutant mosquitos that are imune is not the way to help. They say there are technology that helps already. I think that whatever they do has to be done quickly because many Africans have died. Even though nets are cheap for us for them it is worth a lot. We dont give out enough for everyone.
